Arrive & settle into Aros Mains

Keep your first evening simple. Unpack, pick up supplies around Salen and enjoy supper in your cottage or apartment. Check the coming weather and your boat booking before deciding which outing comes first.
Stand on Mull's highest summit, head out to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles with Turus Mara, and leave time for a beach, a long lunch and the small discoveries along the way. This suggested week brings together memorable outings from your base at Aros Mains near Salen.
SEVEN NIGHTS · SIX FULL DAYS · EXPLORING BY CAR
This spring-to-autumn plan suits active guests with mountain-walking experience. For a Saturday-to-Saturday stay, Day 1 is arrival, Days 2–7 are your full days, and departure is the following morning. The Ben More day assumes suitable, snow-free mountain conditions.

Let the weather set the order. Book Turus Mara early in your stay, leaving some flexibility if a sailing needs to change. Give Ben More the most suitable mountain-weather day, moving the easier outings around it. A spare day helps, but cannot guarantee a sailing or summit.

Keep your first evening simple. Unpack, pick up supplies around Salen and enjoy supper in your cottage or apartment. Check the coming weather and your boat booking before deciding which outing comes first.

Ease into the week with Calgary Bay and the Art in Nature woodland trail. Pause at the café when it is open, then give the beach as much of the afternoon as you like. Bring a picnic if you would rather stay outdoors.
A relaxed first outing, with time to enjoy northwest Mull.
BOOK AHEAD · MOVE WITH THE SAILING CONDITIONS

Join Turus Mara at Ulva Ferry on Mull for their combined Staffa and Treshnish Isles trip. Make this the day's main event: sea views, Staffa's basalt columns and Fingal's Cave, with wildlife along the way.
The April-to-July trip normally includes time ashore on both Lunga and Staffa. The August-to-October version changes with the season, visiting the Treshnish Isles and aiming to land on Staffa; Lunga landings continue only while the puffins remain. All landings depend on sea and weather conditions, and wildlife sightings vary.
Plan around your date: Choose the combined trip from Mull, check its current itinerary and pack lunch, warm waterproof layers and suitable footwear. Read the landing information before booking. Dogs are not permitted on these trips, so arrange suitable care if travelling with one.

Enjoy a gentler day between the bigger outings. Browse the waterfront, visit Mull Museum when open and stop for something tasty on Main Street. Choose an afternoon around the shops or head to the Glass Barn at Isle of Mull Cheese for a café or farm-shop visit.
A useful day to move around the forecast; check individual opening days.
A FULL MOUNTAIN DAY · CHOOSE SUITABLE CONDITIONS

9.25 km return · about 5–6½ hours · 945 m ascent · summit 966 m
Set aside the day for Mull's only Munro. Start at Dhiseig beside Loch na Keal and follow the main ascent, returning by the same route. In clear conditions, the summit offers a remarkable view across Mull and its neighbouring islands.
This is a strenuous mountain walk, with boggy lower ground and a rough, stony upper path. It needs hillwalking fitness, navigation skills and proper equipment. Read the full route and access notes, check a mountain forecast, carry food, water, warm waterproof clothing and a backup means of navigation, and turn back if conditions deteriorate.
Keep the evening easy: Have supper planned before setting off. If the mountain weather is unsuitable, move this outing to another day or choose a lower-level walk that suits the conditions.

Travel through the Ross of Mull to Fionnphort, leave the car on Mull and cross to Iona as a foot passenger. Visit the abbey and its museum, then leave time for lunch and a walk beyond the village that suits your energy and the weather.
Keep this as your main excursion into the southwest. The drive, crossing and island visit make a full day; Ardalanish works better as an alternative outing than another stop to squeeze in.
Before leaving: Check the ferry timetable, service updates and your return options, plus abbey admission arrangements. Buying a foot-passenger ticket does not reserve a particular sailing.

Leave this day available for a moved boat trip or a better opportunity for Ben More. If your two highlights are already complete, take the small foot ferry to community-owned Ulva for woodland, coastal scenery and lunch at the Boathouse.
Choose a walk to suit your remaining energy, or enjoy a shorter visit around the eastern side of the island. The ferry to Ulva is a separate service from your Turus Mara excursion; leave your car on Mull and confirm the last return before walking.
Check before you go: Ulva ferry days are seasonal and limited, and the Boathouse has its own opening hours. Check current island notices too; some historic buildings are closed for restoration.
Leave time for packing, checkout and the journey to your ferry. Check your sailing and required check-in time before leaving Aros Mains, and keep any final stop comfortably within that margin.
Swap an outing for something that better fits your interests, energy or the forecast. Our Days Out on Mull page gives you more detail on these alternatives.

Choose this in place of Iona or the optional Ulva day if crafts and beaches are your favourites. Confirm when the looms will be working, bring a picnic and allow a full day for the Ross of Mull.
Explore the Ardalanish idea
A quieter combination of shore, local history and lunch. This makes a change from another island crossing, with the option of picking up something for supper.
Explore the Lochbuie ideaA shorter walk or a quieter day: Our Walks on Mull guide includes woodland and lochside choices such as Glen Aros and Loch Ba. For wet weather, consider an open museum, café or indoor visit from Mull Experiences. Check opening days and any local access notices before setting off.
