Aros Mains Accommodation

Getting to the Isle of Mull and Aros Mains

Planning the journey is part of a Mull holiday. Aros Mains lies beside Aros Castle on the island's east coast, about two miles north of Salen. Its central position makes it convenient for arrivals on any of Mull's three mainland ferry routes.

Before setting off: ferry timetables and service conditions can change. Check the relevant CalMac route page and live service status, then allow generous time for your onward journey.

Main route from Oban

Oban to Craignure

This is the principal route for many visitors arriving from central and southern Scotland. It carries vehicles and foot passengers. CalMac advises booking online in advance, including for foot passengers.

From Craignure, follow signs north towards Salen and Tobermory. Aros Mains is a short distance beyond Salen.

Short crossing from Morvern

Lochaline to Fishnish

This scenic alternative is useful when approaching through Fort William and Morvern. CalMac operates it as a turn-up-and-go service, with tickets available to buy in advance.

Journeys from the south normally also use the Corran Ferry, so check that service as part of your route planning. From Fishnish, follow signs towards Salen and Tobermory.

Northern scenic route

Kilchoan to Tobermory

This route approaches Mull from the Ardnamurchan peninsula and arrives in Tobermory. It is also a turn-up-and-go service, with advance ticket purchase available.

The mainland drive is remote and may include the Corran Ferry when approaching from the south. From Tobermory, follow signs towards Salen and Craignure.

Driving on Mull

Mull is larger than it first appears, and many island roads are single track. Leave more time than an ordinary mileage estimate suggests and enjoy the journey at an unhurried pace.

  • Use the passing places and pull into those on your left.
  • Let faster traffic behind you pass when it is safe.
  • Stay on the tarmac; soft verges can conceal rocks and drains.
  • Never park in a passing place or block access.
  • Watch for sheep, cattle, deer, cyclists and walkers.

Visit Mull & Iona provides a clear guide to driving on Mull. Detailed directions for your chosen property are sent to booked guests before arrival.

Travelling without a car

Oban railway station and the ferry terminal are close to one another, making the Oban–Craignure route the simplest public-transport approach for many guests. Buses operate between Craignure, Salen and Tobermory, although not every bus connects with every sailing.

Check current ScotRail information for Oban and West Coast Motors' Isle of Mull bus timetables. Bus connections do not meet every sailing, so compare both parts of the journey before you travel.
