Days Out on Mull

A little exploring. A good lunch. Time to linger.

A woodland trail that leads to the beach. A working loom that holds your attention. Something delicious to take back for supper. These are the small discoveries that can make a day on Mull.

From Aros Mains near Salen, choose one of these four suggested days and give yourself time to enjoy it. Each brings together a few places in the same part of the island, with room to change your plans as the weather or your mood takes you.

Staying for a week? Our A Week on Mull itinerary brings together Ben More, a Turus Mara island trip and quieter days.

Four ways to spend a day

These are independent outings by car from Aros Mains. Allow a day for each, including the journey; Ardalanish is a longer excursion to the Ross of Mull. The order below is a suggestion, so check opening days before choosing when to go.

NORTHWEST MULL

Calgary: beach, woodland art & cake

For beach lovers and curious wanderers

Start with the art. Take your time along Calgary Art in Nature, finding sculptures among the trees. The woodland trail and bay make a lovely combination of things to look at and space to breathe.

Pause for lunch. Stop at the Café at Calgary Arts for a bite to eat or coffee and cake, with more artwork to enjoy indoors.

Leave the afternoon for the beach. Wander along Calgary Bay, settle down with a book or simply sit and watch the water. There is no need to squeeze in another stop.

Plan your day: The linked combined bay and art trail is about 3 km, with 1–2 hours allowed for the walk itself. Add time for lunch and the beach. The café is seasonal; bring a picnic if it is closed.

TOBERMORY & NORTHEAST MULL

Tobermory: island stories & local flavours

Colourful waterfront and harbour at Tobermory

For food lovers and anyone drawn to island history

Begin by the harbour. Browse the waterfront, then visit Mull Museum on Main Street for a closer look at the island's past. It is a small, volunteer-run museum with free entry; donations help support its work.

Make time for something tasty. Have a look at the day's offerings at Hooked on Main Street, or choose a café or restaurant from our Places to Eat guide.

Choose your afternoon. Stay in town for shops and an ice cream, or visit the Glass Barn café and farm shop at Isle of Mull Cheese, just outside Tobermory. Pick up some cheese for a simple supper back at Aros Mains.

Plan your day: Museum and café openings vary by season and day. A farm tour is a separate bookable activity; if that appeals, build the day around your chosen tour time.

THE ROSS OF MULL

Ardalanish: working looms & a wide sandy bay

For makers, wool enthusiasts and beach wanderers

Make the mill your main stop. Head to Ardalanish Farm near Bunessan to explore the Isle of Mull Weavers' shop. Traditional looms, natural wool colours and plant dyes offer plenty to interest anyone who loves how things are made.

Bring a picnic. Keep lunch simple and give yourself time for the coast. A short walk from the parking area near the farm leads to Ardalanish Bay.

Spend the afternoon by the sea. Enjoy the long sandy beach and look at the rock formations along the shore. Leave time for the journey back, with a new appreciation of the wool and landscape of Mull.

Plan your day: If seeing the looms working is the highlight for you, confirm the weaving days with Ardalanish before travelling. Keep this as a day on the Ross of Mull and give Iona a day of its own.

SOUTHERN MULL

Lochbuie: shores, old stones & a good lunch

Moy Castle beside the shore at Lochbuie

For quiet scenery with a little history

Arrive with time to wander. Make Lochbuie your destination and enjoy the setting beside the sea loch. Moy Castle and the standing stones offer ways to add a little island history to your visit.

Stop at the Old Post Office. Settle in for lunch or home baking at this farm and coffee shop. You may also find a Lochbuie Larder meal to take back for supper.

Choose how far to go. Spend more time by the shore, or plan a walk towards Laggan Sands. Choose your route to suit the weather, the ground and everyone in your party.

Plan your day: Check the shop's current opening and lunch times, and read a full route description before walking further. Leave plenty of time for the drive along the single-track approach.

Leave room for an unplanned day

A shorter walk, a good book and something local for supper can be enough. Our Walks on Mull guide includes woodland and lochside outings around central Mull, while Food Shops & Local Produce can help you find picnic supplies and ingredients to enjoy back at your cottage or apartment.

For boat trips, wildlife outings and other activities to build a day around, browse Mull Experiences.

Before you set off: Check the linked visitor information for current opening days and access. Allow extra time on Mull's single-track roads, and choose footwear and walks for the conditions. These suggestions leave the pace up to you.
