Mull Wildlife

A Sanctuary for the Wild

The Isle of Mull is one of the premier wildlife destinations in Europe. From the "Flying Barn Doors" (Sea Eagles) circling above the castle ruins to the elusive otters playing in the kelp forests of the Sound, Aros Mains is surrounded by nature in its purest form.

Whether you are a dedicated birdwatcher or simply enjoy the sight of a stag on the horizon, the estate provides a front-row seat to the island's famous "Big Five."

The Iconic Five

Mull is home to a spectacular array of species, but five, in particular, define the island’s rugged character:

  • White-Tailed Sea Eagle: With an eight-foot wingspan, these magnificent birds are often seen hunting over the Sound of Mull. Keep an eye on the tall pines around Aros—they are a favorite lookout for these giants.
  • Golden Eagle: The more elusive "Goldie" prefers the high peaks and remote glens. Look for their distinct silhouette soaring over the hills behind the estate.
  • Otters: Mull’s coastline is one of the best places in the UK to spot the Eurasian Otter. They are active year-round; look for them at low tide along the shoreline near Aros Castle.
  • Red Deer: Britain’s largest land mammal. In the summer, they graze on the high moors, but as the weather cools, they descend into the glens. Their "roaring" during the autumn rut is an unforgettable sound that echoes across the estate.
  • Hen Harriers: Known as the "Grey Ghost," these elegant raptors are often seen quartering low over the heather and rough grassland in search of prey.

Life on the Sound

The waters directly in front of Aros Mains are a highway for marine life. A pair of binoculars is a must for any guest sitting by the window or walking the shoreline.

  • Whales & Dolphins: Minke whales, Bottlenose dolphins, and Harbour porpoises are frequent visitors to the Sound of Mull, particularly during the warmer months from May to September.
  • Seals: Both Grey and Common seals can be found hauled out on the rocky skerries. They are curious creatures and will often pop their heads up to watch you as you walk the coastal paths.

A Seasonal Calendar

Season Wildlife Highlights
Spring Sea Eagles begin nesting; Puffin colonies return to the nearby Treshnish Isles; Bluebells carpet the woods.
Summer Peak time for Whale and Dolphin sightings; Seabird colonies are at their most active; long "Gloaming" hours for otter spotting.
Autumn The Red Deer Rut (Sept/Oct) is a dramatic spectacle; migratory birds arrive from the North; dramatic light for photography.
Winter Golden Eagles are more visible on lower ground; Otters are easier to spot in the soft winter light; perfect for stargazing.

From the Doorstep

You don’t always need to go on a trek to find wildlife at Aros Mains. Many of our guests enjoy sightings of Pine Martens in the evening, Curlews calling across the fields, and Ospreys fishing in the bay during the spring migration.

Photography Tip:

The ruins of Aros Castle, just a short walk from your accommodation, provide a stunning backdrop for capturing the island's raptors against the dramatic sky.
