Aros Mains sits beside the estuary near Salen, with the ruins of Aros Castle, the shore and woodland walks close to the properties. The island stretches far beyond a road map's first impression, but this central position gives you a practical base for days towards Tobermory, the west coast, Craignure and the Ross of Mull.
Begin nearby. Aros Castle is a thirteenth-century hall-house and bailey on a rocky promontory overlooking the estuary. The monument is open to the elements and the ground can be uneven, so take care around the ruins and shoreline. The setting changes with the tide and is a rewarding place for a quiet walk, photography and watching the water.
Head north for Tobermory's colourful harbour, independent shops, cafés and boat trips. Just outside the town, Aros Park has woodland paths, waterfalls, viewpoints and a coastal trail. Forestry and Land Scotland publishes current visitor information and any temporary path notices, so check its page before setting out.
From Aros Mains, this makes an easy day that can combine a woodland walk with time around Tobermory. In busier months, allow time for parking and check opening days before relying on a particular shop, café or attraction.
Mull's west side rewards slow travel. Loch na Keal, Calgary and the roads towards Ulva offer changing views across sea lochs, islands and mountains. Choose fewer stops than the map tempts you to fit in, leave time for passing places and enjoy the journey as part of the day.
Weather and road conditions can change quickly. Carry suitable clothing and footwear, and check route or operator information before longer walks, boat trips or remote excursions.
Travelling south opens up another side of the island. The Ross of Mull leads towards Fionnphort and the passenger ferry to Iona, while boat trips in the area visit Staffa and the Treshnish Isles in season. These are full-day outings from Aros Mains, so check sailing times, availability and the time needed for Mull's single-track roads before you leave.
Book boat trips and time-sensitive travel directly with the operator. Conditions may affect sailings, and the operator's current advice should always take priority.
Mull is known for eagles, otters, deer and marine wildlife. Some memorable sightings happen without a formal itinerary: from the shore, on a woodland walk or while pausing safely at a viewpoint. Binoculars help you enjoy wildlife without getting too close.
Keep dogs under close control around wildlife and livestock, leave animals space and avoid stopping where a vehicle would block a road or passing place. A guided wildlife trip can be a good first introduction and supports people who know the island and its species well.
Mull's distances take longer than they appear. Many roads are single track: use the passing place on your left for oncoming traffic, and also pull in to let faster traffic behind pass. Do not park in passing places or drive onto soft verges.
The main ferry route is Oban to Craignure. CalMac currently advises passengers and vehicles to buy tickets in advance, arrive by the stated check-in time and check service status before travel. Alternative mainland routes serve Fishnish from Lochaline and Tobermory from Kilchoan. Visit Mull & Iona's travel guide also explains island travel and single-track driving.
